Processed VS Fresh

Food. It fuels our bodies and keeps us healthy and happy – at least that’s what it is supposed to do. According to various sources though –  Adult obesity rates have doubled and childhood obesity rates nearly tripled since 1980. Isn’t that a terrifying statistic?  How did the very thing that keeps us alive turn into an enemy?

A bit of research on this topic lead me to draw the conclusion that the rate of obesity directly correlates with the rise of processed foods. Technically, body weight is very simple.

  • People lose weight when they burn more calories than they consume.
  • People gain weight when they consume more calories than they burn.

The latter is easy to do when you eat a lot of processed foods, as it contains hidden sugars and tons of other bad stuff. Meaning, even though you might eat significant portions, it doesn’t contain enough nutrients, so you get hungry again soon. You’re eating “empty calories”.

Calories aren’t all you should be worried about though, because contrary to popular belief, not all calories were created equal. Consuming a 1000+ calorie fast food meal is not equal to consuming 1000+ calories worth of fruits and  vegetables. Just like carbs from corn is not equal to carbs from bread or pasta. And sugar from fruit is not equal to sugar from having a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. [So sad, because I love Reese’s].

  • Processed foods = lots of calories with little or no nutritional value.
  • Natural foods = good calories full of vitamins, minerals and fibers!

“Eating Chirpy” does not mean ‘all you can eat’ though. It means choosing quality over quantity. Fresh over Processed. Quality over Quantity. The Eating Chirpy philosophy is as simple as that.
